THE MIKADO Wilton’s Music Corridor E1

HIGH NOTES AND KNOBBLY KNEES

I’m a relative newcomer to Gilbert & Sullivan, having lengthy thought I hated them  (heard too many gammony followers in my childhood wrecking the songs).  It was Sasha Regan’s jokey all-male productions that lured me to full-on affection for the self-aware satire,  surreally foolish plots and galumphingly pleased tunes .

So I hadn’t recognized that The Mikado has so most of the most well-known ones:  A wandering Minstrel I,  Three Little Women, Tit Willow, The Flowers That bloom within the Spring, tra-la!   Glad surrprise there.  Much less shock, however nice pleasure,  in yet one more of Regan’s amiable framings of the story,  by which a gang of lads enact it with – belying  their slickly skilled abilities – a lovely sense of am-dram gusto and cobbled-up costumes.

For Iolanthe the boys have been discovering previous scores in an attic;  right here they emerge larking, fifteen of them,  from a 1950’s scout ridge tent,  whereas the scoutmaster frowningly passes by with a cricket bat after which takes a task.  Thus knobbly knees, boyish gallumphing and the required falsetto add the the comedy,  whereas the music – Anto Buckley on piano – is given correct respect and a few very fantastic voices :  notably David McKechnie among the many male roles and Sam Kipling faultlessly hitting the excessive vivid notes of Miss Plumb.

You at all times are inclined to lose a number of phrases within the extra speedy falsetto choruses, however most G and S followers know all of them anyway, and the solos are clear and wonderful.  As, naturally, are the ridiculous rhymes:  I don’t know why,  however there’s a explicit bracing cheek within the atrociousness  of rhyming  “Lord Excessive Executioner” with not desirous to be “of your pleasure a diminutioner”. All of the satires on officialdom are perennially welcome too.

Ryan Dawson Laight the designer has given them a wonderful revolving tent, by means of the roof of which a number of characters emerge or vanish as required by the plot.   The women of the Titipu courtroom giggle with deafening glee and try a maypole;  a excessive spot (maybe particularly from my companion recent from her daughter’s marriage ceremony)  is the scene the place they shave and brutally wax the ‘bride’ whereas singing her epithalamion.   Poor Kitty Shaw arrives by bike, and her unhappy  lament “Alone and but alive” will get additional pathos by being accompanied by  her vigorous use of a bicycle pump.  All of it fits Wilton’s very effectively certainly.
