DK and Hugh Welchman are the administrators of 2017’s Loving Vincent, a Vincent Van Gogh biopic created solely from individually painted photos. Now they return with the equally bold The Peasants, for which you’ll be able to watch the trailer above. As the filmmakers write within the press equipment of the movie’s making:
While The Peasants incorporates the identical portray animation method made widespread with our earlier movie Loving Vincent, our method to the portray animation for The Peasants diversified considerably from Vincent. […] The over 100 portray animators who labored on the movie did so on specifically designed PAWS models (Painting Animation Work Stations), which Breakthru developed for Loving Vincent, in 4 studios in Poland, Serbia, Lithuania, and Ukraine.
Despite the movie being animated, the entire characters in The Peasants are performed by actors. These actors labored both on units specifically constructed to seem like actual places, or towards inexperienced screens, with matte work being composited in, together with computer-generated animation, after the shoot. For the aim of structure, we created the village of Lipce within the Unreal engine to present the actors a way of location whereas capturing towards the ocean of inexperienced. […]
The portray animators then use this reference footage and paint over this close to the model (brushstrokes, colors, stage of element) set by the design work to color the primary body of their shot on canvas, sized 67cm by 49cm. They then animate the shot by portray the following keyframe, matching the brushstrokes, color, and impasto of their earlier body, for all components of the shot which are transferring. At the top, they’re left with a portray of the final body of the shot. Each body is recorded with a Canon 6D digital stills digicam at 6k decision.
The keyframes created by the oil portray animators are then despatched to the inbetweening course of which takes the model and brushstrokes of the unique oil work and including some digital brushstrokes to provide you with the inbetweened frames. The quantity of oil portray executed per shot diversified from each body to each 4 frames at 12 frames per second.
The Peasants enters restricted launch from Sony Pictures Classics starting with a New York run on January 26, adopted by a Los Angeles rollout on February 2, with nationwide enlargement to comply with.
