Virgos love journey, and who doesn’t need a sprint of superhero sci-fi in a surreal coming-of-age story?
Author-director Boots Riley (“Sorry to Hassle You”) debuts Prime Video collection “I’m a Virgo,” which premiered at 2023 SXSW, this summer time.
Per the official synopsis, the collection is a darkly comedic fantastical coming-of-age joyride about Cootie (Jharrel Jerome), a 13-foot-tall teenager in Oakland, California. Having grown up hidden away, passing time on a weight loss plan of comedian books and TV exhibits, he escapes to expertise the sweetness and contradictions of the true world. He varieties friendships, finds love, navigates awkward conditions, and encounters his idol, the real-life superhero named The Hero (Walton Goggins).
Riley wrote and directed all seven episodes of the collection, which had a price range of $53 million as Riley confirmed to IndieWire. The filmmaker beforehand shared in 2020 that the collection focuses on a gaggle of teenagers who, “as a result of they’re Black, will not be allowed to be youngsters. They’re not allowed to come back of age. It’s about the best way the world sees them.”
Riley added, “For me, it’s really experiential. How do I maintain you and wanting to maintain watching, and the way do I get you do really feel one thing? I don’t need you to maintain watching as a result of I’ve completed this straightforward, manipulative factor that makes it’s important to press ‘watch the following one’ once more. I hate tales that don’t finish…I’m not saying what number of seasons it is going to be, however there’s a narrative that ends.”
IndieWire critic Ben Travers wrote within the SXSW review, “‘I’m a Virgo’ is a deal with, and even when its comedy veers into darkness, the primary 4 episodes discover pleasure by every character, their tales, and Riley’s exuberance in telling them.”
