A MODERN CLASSIC DONE WITH VIGOUR

Michael Frayn’s play-about-actors is all the time welcome: a comic book masterpiece and loving research in theatre’s personal absurdity. The first act reveals a last limping rehearsal for a hackneyed trouser-dropping farce;  the second a view from backstage midway by way of the tour as we hear the play persevering with whereas watching the forged’s jealousies and inadequacies creating mimed fury, mutual sabotage , violence and desperation to maintain the whisky bottle and the oldest veteran aside.  The third  act is again onstage for a final efficiency which dissolves into helpless confusion.

Its brilliance lies each in satirizing its personal career and within the remorseless rhythm of returning strains and rising hoplessness.  The problem of turning around the set – twice – is very fascinating in Douglas RIntoul’s  touring manufacturing: it’s  in partnership with Hornchurch, Theatre by the Lake and Théatres de la Ville de Luxembourgwhose Clio Van Aerde has created some intelligent movable units:  and not using a curtain the viewers very a lot loved watching high-efficiency stagehands hauling it throughout, twice.

Altogether it’s appreciable enjoyable,   dealing with all of the bodily jokes superbly – George Kemp’s tied-shoelace and downstairs tumble positively heroic – and Russell Richardson’s drunken previous ham Selsden is a pleasure.  But they’re all completely on-point and fearless.   And goodness, on this play they must be.
